Patrons are at the heart of what libraries do and this web site of web sites is so useful to patrons for information, for entertainment, and for homework. IPL2 is Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Librarians' Internet Index (LII). It makes readily available easily digestible information about a wide array of topics from governmental, news and nongovernmental sources. It is perfect when a patron needs just a little information and it is ideal for helping with homework. The web site is only part of IPL2, as there is also a free 24/7 question-answering service.

Like previous editions, the 5th edition of Management of Electronic and Digital Media is an excellent information resource for anybody responsible for electronic and digital media. In terms of content it is certainly well pitched and suited for its target audiences: undergraduate and graduate students. I find the price of US$165.95 very expensive, and although an excellent publication, I am not sure if I can recommend it as good value. That being said, it is the kind of textbook that made me realise again how many interesting topics there are for teaching, and the value of a well-structured textbook, pulling key issues together in one publication for the benefit of lecturers and students.

The Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) was established under the Central Intelligence Agency in 1941 to monitor and translate foreign media (newspapers, periodicals, radio, television). The Open Source Center (OSC) now continues the work of the FBIS, to "ensure that the Intelligence Community maximizes the use of publicly available, foreign print, radio, television, and Internet news and information".
The FBIS Daily Reports, printed from 1941 to 1996, have been the USA's principal record of political and historical open source intelligence; they are reports of events as they occurred from a local perspective (Readex).

Colleges, universities and high schools have long heard the complaint about the cost of textbooks. Basically, as soon as some textbooks are published they are out of date. A book on law, for example, changes depending upon the legal structure of the state. A work on science changes as new items are discovered or old beliefs are debunked. A lot of funds are spent - either by the school board or by the student - in purchasing textbooks that may be used infrequently or may be soon out of date. Given the nature of Web 2.0 technologies and beliefs and the inherent problems of print textbooks, Wikibooks has grown.

For those that wish to become teachers, this may be one possible means of redressing the imbalance in education in the USA: as this site notes, less "than 13% of all current teachers are persons of colour, while over one third of their students are of colour". This is the goal taken by Michael Genzuk in creating the National Clearinghouse for Paraeducator Resources: Paraeducator Pathways into Teaching (referred to as the Clearinghouse in this review).
